Unionville girls place 7th in nation

The Unionville High School girls cross country team was looking to add one more accomplishment to its incredible season on Saturday, and they did just that by placing seventh overall in the team standings at the prestigious Nike Cross Country Nationals in Portland, Ore.

Unionville, who had been ranked No. 1 in the country at one point this season, earned the impressive top-10 finish in the nation.

Senior Courtney Smith finished 10th overall as well in the nation, as she finished in a time of 17:49.9, which was 59 seconds behind winner Alexa Efraimson.

Wayzata (Minn.) took first overall in the team standings.

Olivia Young placed second for Unionville, and 42nd overall with a time of 18:18.4. Kacie Breeding was close behind placing 60th overall and finishing at 18:37.

The rest of the Unionville girls times were: Gretchen Mills, 144th overall, 19:15; Bridgette Zerbe, 147th overall, 19:42.8; Emily Fisher, 150th overall, 19:44.7; and Elizabeth Edwards, 171st overall, 20:08.6.

The girls competed in a field of 198 total runners.
