The sport of lacrosse enjoys enormous popularity in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and now fans of Octorara sports will get a chance to cheer for their own team in the growing game. Octorara will field both a boys team and a PIAA affiliated varsity girls team (look for a preview of the girls team in next week's Post Ledger).

Boys lacrosse, as of now, is not a P.I.A.A. sanctioned sport, and is mainly played in the eastern half of the state of Pennsylvania. Octorara's schedule will be comprised of junior varsity (JV) and JV-B games.

There are currently 24 boys out for the team, with a starting line-up that is in a constant state of flux as the players and coaches work to see who might be best at a given position.

So far, Bryan Mabry, Justin Stefanosky, and Donnie Kunkel, have all played midfield,

Matt Carney, Wes Norton, Jeremy Colden and Josh Fellman have seen time at attacker, and the defense has featured Kelby Hershey, James Keen, Aaron Norton, and Mike Kinney.

"The kids are working very hard," said boys coach Mark Peticca. "We have held open gym time during the months of December, January, and February for both boys and girls. The coaches have worked very hard as well. They have given their time for free and scheduled games on their own. We are hoping to run an intramural program in May at the middle school to create interest to help the program grow. Also, the program is completely funded by the players, private donations, and fund raisers. With the success of the program this year we hope to add more games next year."
