WEST GROVE - At its essence, football is a lineman's game. The position demands the sacrifice of individual glory for the betterment of the entire unit. Friday night's contest between Unionville and Avon Grove certainly fit that bill.

Unionville's offensive line paved the way for a whopping 425 yards of rushing, controlling play throughout a 27-8 victory over the Red Devils.

The Indians' first two offensive drives were almost identical-eight plays each, all running plays-and each culminating in rushing touchdowns. John Stradling started the scoring with a 9-yard plunge in the first quarter, and senior quarterback Tom Pancoast scored the first of his two TDs early in the second to give the Indians a 13-0 edge.

On their third TD drive of the evening, the Indians got creative, going to the air for the first time. But inside the red zone, they went back to the old reliable running game, with Pancoast going over for yet another short TD burst. Brad Pechin's conversion made it 21-0 at the break.

It takes one heck of a committee of backs to run for 425 yards, but that's exactly what Unionville has. Pechin paced the group with 168 yards on 13 carries-including an explosive 57-yard touchdown run just after halftime to close out the scoring for Unionville-with John Stradling contributing 122 yards on 16 carries.

Garrett Scargill played the 'closer' role for the Indians, coverting multiple 3rd down runs to allow the Indians to keep possession for the final eight minutes of the game. Scargill finished with 84 yards on ten carries.

In their first year under coach Doug Langley, Avon Grove's focus each week has been on building momentum. While the first half was rather one-sided, Avon Grove was able to take several positives out of the last 24 minutes.

Junior quarterback Tanner Peck found Cody Davis along the right sideline, with Davis eluding tackles and ultimately winning a footrace for a 45-yard TD catch. Avon Grove finished the drive with a nifty two-point conversion when reserve QB Austen Radecki took an option pitch and found Harrison alone in the back of the end zone.
