KENNETT SQUARE—Two teens, one a juvenile, are in custody after eluding police for nearly a week after being named suspects in an incident in which gunshots were fired into an occupied house in Kennett Square. They were captured following a police chase that started in Delaware and ended in a crash in New Garden Township, during which time the teens threw two handguns from their vehicle.
Arrested were Christian Sanchez-Franco, 18, and Ivan Castano-Castaneda, 17. Police charged Castano-Castenda as an adult due to the nature of the crime, following approval from the Chester County District Attorney’s office. Both were charged with three counts of aggravated assault, weapons offenses, recklessly endangering another person and related crimes.
According to authorities, the incident took place on April 10 at 1:30 a.m. Police said two people, later identified at Castano-Castaneda and Sanchez-Franco, fired five rounds from a semi-automatic handgun into the direction of the bedroom of the house, occupied by three people.
Police were called after the gunshots were fired, but the suspects immediately fled the area. Police conducted an intensive days-long investigation, and determined that Castano-Castaneda and Sanchez-Franco were suspects. An arrest warrant was issued for both.
Five days later, on April 15, the investigation led police to Delaware. Chester County Detectives and the Kennett Square Police Department Criminal Investigation Division conducted surveillance on the location where they were told Casstano-Castaneda and Sanchez-Franco were staying.
When confronted by authorities at a motel in Newark, Del., Castano-Castaneda and Sanchez-Franco fled by vehicle. Delaware State Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop and a police chase ensued. The chase ended as the suspect vehicle entered Pennsylvania and crashed into another car in the area of Newark Road and Broad Run in New Garden Township, Chester County. Just prior to the crash, police said Castano-Castaneda and Sanchez-Franco threw two firearms were thrown from their vehicle.
The driver of the car struck by the vehicle driven by the suspects was an adult female not identified by police. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for observation.
Both Castano-Castaneda and Sanchez-Franco were taken into custody immediately following the crash. Additional charges are being filed by the Delaware State Police and the Southern Chester County Regional Police Department for criminal acts involved during the pursuit and at the scene of the crash.
