Yellow Dog streaks into second place with big winThis week the M-D league "Game of the Week" was a showdown between Yellow Dog Inn and Wyncote Golf Club with second place in the league on the line. Wyncote entered looking to rebound from a tough loss to Maddogs, while Yellow Dog Inn was looking to continue their climb up the standings after a rough start to the season.
Yellow Dog got on the board in the top of the first inning after Jules Pelligrini singled and stole second base eventually scoring on a Corey Deleo double. Wyncote was unable to generate any offense in their half of the first as Yellow Dog pitcher Tom Patterson allowed only a Chris Grasty double in the inning.
Yellow Dog was unable to do much in the top of the second with only Ken Brown able to record a hit off of Wyncote pitcher Matt Doughten. The bottom of the second saw Wyncote tie the game at 1-all. Mike Maitre opened the inning with a single then advanced to third on a single from Doughten. A Tim Holton ground ball scored Maitre on the fielder's choice. Wyncote's rally ended with back-to-back fly ball outs from Drew Baumgardner and Alex Viscidi.
Yellow Dog fired back in their next at-bat as Pelligrini led off with a single then moved up on a Brent Becker single. Both runners scored on a Deleo triple to give Yellow Dog a 3-1 lead. Bill Hampton followed with a sacrifice fly to left center and Yellow Dog led 4-1 before Wyncote came to bat in the bottom of the third. Jim Fisher led off with a walk for Wyncote and eventually made it to third but was unable to score as Wyncote batters followed with two pop outs and a ground out to end the inning.
Doughten sat Yellow Dog down in order in the fourth inning to give Wyncote another chance to chip into Yellow Dog's lead. Chris Neskie led off the inning with a long homerun and Maitre followed with a walk. Despite a single by Holton and a walk to Viscidi, Patterson was able to get Fisher to fly out to right field to end the rally.
Yellow Dog came to bat in the top of the fifth holding a 4-2 lead and looking to add to their lead. Travis Work led off and reached first on an error by Wyncote third basemen Drew Baumgardner. A Becker single placed Yellow Dog runners on first and second with no outs. Hampton grounded out and Deleo popped out. With two outs it looked as if Wyncote would escape the jam but back-to-back-to-back walks forced in two runs before Doughten got Brown to pop out to end the inning. Wyncote got one run back in the bottom of the frame when they loaded the bases and Matt Doughten Jr. scored on a sacrifice fly from Neskie. Maitre followed with a fly out to left center and Brian Bolt was thrown out at the plate on a great throw from Pelligrini.
Yellow Dog went down in order in the sixth and Wyncote was able to score a run when Holton scored on a Viscidi double. Both teams entered the crucial seventh inning with Yellow Dog leading 6-4.
Yellow Dog Inn quickly gave the team a little more cushion when Becker led off with a walk followed by a long Deleo home run. Yellow Dog was able to load the bases again but left them all stranded when Mitch Nesbitt grounded out to third base to end the attack. Wyncote did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh as Bolt led off with a single and scored two batters later on Neskie's second homerun of the night. Maitre followed with a single but got no further than second base as Patterson was able to induce fly ball outs off the bats of Doughten and Holton to clinch the 8-6 victory for Yellow Dog Inn.
