Unionville and Avon Grove were two of the top-10 high school volleyball teams in the state last year.
In 2009 both squads once again find themselves having strong campaigns, and they came into their meeting with one another last week as a couple of the premier teams in the Ches-Mont League.
Unionville entered with a 8-0 league record and stood in sole possession of first place in the Ches-Mont's American Division. Avon Grove, meanwhile, came in 9-1 in the league and in second place in the National Division, with its only loss coming to undefeated Bishop Shanahan (10-0).
The nonleague showdown, held last Friday evening at Unionville High School on homecoming weekend, went completely in favor of the host Indians as they swept visiting Avon Grove by a score of 3-0.
Unionville (10-1 overall) won by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-19.
The Indians were led by Megan Cohen (11 kills), Moira McEvoy (six kills), Chelsea Rafetto (19 assists) and Shannon Donaghey (10 digs).
Avon Grove, who was playing without arguably its top player in MacKenzie Kleespies, received strong games in the loss from Rhiannon Fiala (eight kills), Annabelle Charlton (12 assists) and Emily Cousineau (12 assists).
