BaseballI have to imagine I was one of the few fans still watching at 1:40 a.m. when the MLB All-Star game finally reached its inevitable conclusion with the AL winning in the bottom of the 15th.
It was a great game, though I could have lived without blowhard Tim McCarver talking in sentence fragments for nearly five straight innings about how the Rays would prefer that Scott Kazmir not have to pitch.
My question is this: If you really don't want the guy to pitch, why not just decline the invitation, so that the manager can add a guy to the roster that is available to pitch? Yes, Kazmir was used, and picked up the win, but it really wasn't fair to AL manager Terry Francona to have to ignore the wishes of his closest division rival this season, just so he could finish out a glorified exhibition game.
Here's another thought. How about inviting a small group of pitchers, say 3-5, that are not actually on the roster, and can only be used if necessary, like when a game goes 15 innings?
Really, that has to be better than the thought of seeing J.D. Drew and David Wright come in as relievers, doesn't it?
One other note on the All-Star Game: Man, I feel bad for Marlins' second baseman Dan Uggla. Not only did he have an awful game, he then had to deal with every hack sportswriter in the country using horrible puns of his last name to describe just how bad his game was.
