A single vehicle crash early Sunday morning has left one person dead and another seriously injured.
Unionville High School junior Shannon Strawley was killed when her vehicle left the road as she was traveling north on McCue Road, north of Woodview Road, in London Grove Township.
Strawley's 2005 Chevrolet Silverado collided head-on with a tree along the east shoulder. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Passenger Robert Galloway, a West Grove resident, was immediately air lifted to Christiana Hospital. A spokesperson from Christiana's external affairs office listed Galloway's condition as good on Monday morning.
Lieutenant Shelton Snead of the Avondale State Police confirmed that the accident was still under investigation.
Snead could not confirm whether or not alcohol was a factor in the collision.
"We're still waiting on the [blood alcohol content] report," Snead said.
Snead also confirmed that Strawley was not ejected from the vehicle in the course of the accident. The police report states that nether individual was wearing a seatbelt.
The Avondale and West Grove fire companies and fire police assisted the state police at the scene.
Unionville principal Jim Fulginiti said that the mood at the school has been decidedly somber since the news of Shannon's death, with both the staff and the students shocked and saddened by the sudden loss.
Fulginiti described Shannon as a popular girl with a "vivacious and bubbly" demeanor who had many friends. Counseling services for both staff and students have been available as the school tries to find ways to cope with the tragedy.
"It's like a kick in the gut," Fulginiti said.
Fulginiti said that some students are planning to set up a temporary memorial site in the school, where messages and other artifacts can be left and then later given to Shannon's family.
