An Avon Grove High School art student has livened up the appearance of a previously unadorned Hockessin building and, presumably, advanced her painting career.

Lauren Leverage, 16, a rising junior and enthusiastic artist was recently tapped by bar owner Kurt Esser to paint a mural on the side of his building on Route 41 near Rita's Water Ice.

The mural, which illustrates a bulldog as matador inviting the advances of a bull with a red cape, parallels the name of the establishment -- the Dizzy Bulldog. The scene is brightly colored and done in acrylic paints.

Lauren said some of her artwork was at first on display at the Avon Grove art show earlier this spring.

After the show, she said, her art teacher, Miss Deleguardia picked our a few of the good pieces for display on the Oxford Art Walk in May. Lauren's picture was of a Middle Eastern woman wearing a burqa and made the cut to Oxford.

Lauren said some friends of Esser saw the picture, liked it and suggested her as an artist for the bar wall. After speaking with Esser, she worked on sketches. "I came up with several ideas," she said, but most of them were based on the theme she finally settled on. The mural is now complete.

The bar has been temporarily closed but will have a grand re-opening tonight, July 9. Among other things, the bar will have a mechanical riding bull inside.

Lauren participates in cheerleading at the high school.
