The St. Patrick's Running Club of Kennett Square helped to brighten Anson B. Nixon Park last week.Members of the club spent the afternoon scraping and sanding 13 of the park benches that are located around the ponds and playground. They painted 11 of them, as we ran out of paint just as the pizza arrived.
"The students all worked very hard and showed team work as grade levels worked together," said Jeff Henderson, coordinator of the running club. "I was very impressed by their dedication to doing a thorough job. Motivation was high in helping out the park, and most are excited about returning next year.
The club has 23 members and there were about 18 student and 2 adults, ranging from 5th through 8th grade.
Mark Riggins, who works for the Kennett Square park grounds, supplied the group with the sanding and painting supplies, as well as a pavilion and a Kubota to drive around. Giordano's donated several pizzas for the groupl.
The project received the blessing of Therese Waters, principal at St. Patrick's. She provided the leeway out of school and in allowing the club to walk to and from the park after school each Tuesday to run.
The club is planning more community service activities in the future
