Soroptimist International of Solanco, a service club of local women, recently teamed up with the Solanco Food Bank to help generate food and monetary donations to fill the food bank's shelves.During the past several weekends, members from the Soroptimist club spent over eight hours standing outside the doors of Musser's Market and Ferguson and Hassler supermarket handing out lists to shoppers and asking them to consider picking up items off the list for the Food Bank.
"The response was tremendous, and we were humbled by the generosity of the local community," commented Dottie Tomlinson, Soroptimist Member and former owner of Dottie's Snack Bar. The club collected over six truckloads of food, money and personal care items for the food bank.
"It was a very easy and convenient way to help out the food bank and to give back to the local community. People are already planning to shop, so to pick up a box of cereal, toothpaste or canned vegetables was a simple way to give," said Diana Urbine, SI club member.
This service opportunity is not unique to the Soroptimist Club and is opportunity available to any group or community organization that would like to serve the needs of the community through the Food Bank. The holidays are a common time to support the Food Bank, but they need donations and support year round. The Solanco Food Bank is a joint ministry between the Solanco Ministerium and the Community Action Program (CAP) of Lancaster County. The food bank serves needy families of 14 townships in southern Lancaster County. In an average month, approximately 35 families are provided with emergency groceries adequate to fill their needs for six days.
