On Oct. 13, the Fred S. Engle Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization will host the second annual Run The Grove 5K and Fun Run. The run is a fund-raiser for the PTO, which supports student activities and programs. Start time for the Fun Run will be 8:15 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m.

'Last year's run was a big success, despite the snow, sleet and rain,' said Leslie Wallace, FSEMS PTO president. 'This year we're hoping for a very large turnout. This race is all about kids and families running and walking together. We're trying to promote health and running, raise money for the school and increase community spirit.'

All 5K participants will receive a t-shirt and a bag filled with a variety of giveaways. Trophies and gift certificates will be awarded to overall and age-group winners; second and third-place finishers will receive medals. The race features over 30 trophies and medals for top finishers between the ages of 10 and 19.

'In terms of sponsorship, local businesses have really come through for us this year,' Wallace added. 'We have over 20 sponsors at four different levels, including Keenan Auto Body, our Presenting Sponsor. Every donation is greatly appreciated.'

A unique feature of Run The Grove is that the race will finish on the track inside the Avon Grove High School football stadium, where family and friends can cheer from the bleachers. The Fun Run will also take place on the track. 'It's great to be able to use the stadium for an event like this,' said Wallace. 'We think it helps make our race a little different. Also, last year's runners told us how much they enjoyed running on the closed streets around the school. It's a rare opportunity.'

The 5K race will begin on School House Road and end inside the stadium off of State Road. All roads used on the course will be partially closed starting at 8:30 a.m.; roads will be reopened as soon as possible.

To register for the 5K race and get more details, including a complete course map, go to www.runthegrove.com; no registration is necessary for the Fun Run. Registration is $25; you can sign up online, by mail, or in person the day of the race. Registration opens at 7:45 a.m. in front of the AGHS football stadium. There is plenty of parking at AGHS and FSEMS; no parking is allowed on State Road, School House Road, or in adjacent neighborhoods.
