LONDON GROVE >> Pennsylvania State Police confirmed on Tuesday that there is an ongoing investigation into an alleged sexting incident at a local middle school.

According to state police at the Avondale Barracks, four middle school students attending Fred S. Engle Middle School reportedly shared a sexually explicit photo of a female classmate.

The student reportedly took the photo herself, and shared it with another boy in the school, who allegedly shared it with another boy, who shared it with yet another boy, police said.

Police wrote in a news release that the incident took place between March 27 and April 24, and all four suspects were between 13 and 14 years of age. Police were alerted to the incident on April 27.

Police said if any students are arrested they will be charged as juveniles.

“The Avon Grove School District is cooperating with the Pennsylvania State Police,” stated school officials Monday. “It would not be appropriate to provide details concerning an active police matter, and we are also constrained by student privacy protections from providing any additional comment at this time.”

Sexting cases have been the focus of attention lately following a string of sexting incidents in schools across the county.

In November 2015, Tredyffrin police reported charges against three middle school students at Tredyffrin/Easttown Middle School, for allegedly creating, sending, storing and viewing child pornography including images of classmates, Tredyffrin police said at the time.

At a news conference shortly after the sexting incident at the T/E Middle School, District Attorney Tom Hogan said students attending other school districts in the county “are probably sexting right now.”

“I guarantee that if I pulled every phone in every school in every Chester County school district, you would find a gigantic pile of sexts,” he said.

In January, reports of middle school students attending Collegium Charter School in West Whiteland sharing naked photos of each other surfaced.

And in February, Brandon Keith Mitchell, a teacher working at Downingtown West High School, was charged with felony possession of child pornography, sexual abuse of children, endangering the welfare of children, photographing a computer sex act with children, and corruption of minors after allegedly sharing naked photos of himself with a 17-year-old former student over the phone.
