Darren El poured in 27 points to lead all scorers in the game, but El's performance wasn't good enough on its own to overcome the balanced effort of the visiting Central Bucks East (CBE) squad. The Patriots led almost from start to finish, and left the Oxford gym as 63-54 winners in the first round of the District 1, Class AAAA, playoffs. The Hornets were outscored by the Patriots in all but the final stanza, where they held a 19-14 advantage, but the late surge came only after CBE had padded the cushion to 16 points with barely over two minutes to play.
It didn't help the Hornets' cause when defensive spark plug, Torrin Davis, was whistled for his fifth foul, or that, as a team, Oxford shot a woeful 14-of-31 (45-percent) from the foul line.
Meanwhile, the Patriots put three different players in double digits, and had three other players score at least five points on the night, and had a total of eight players make the scoring ledger.
Behind El, Derek Allen checked in with eight points, followed by Brennan Robinson (7), Justin Curry (6), Kenny Bermudez (3), Garry Franklin (2) and Davis (1).
Earlier in the week, the Hornets fell in a one-game playoff against Great Valley for the Ches-Mont American Division title. Great Valley came out on top 45-36 to claim the championship.
Once again, El led the Hornets in scoring, but was mostly held in check by the Patriots, and finished with 16 points. Allen was next in line with eight, followed by Galen Pugh (5), Robinson (4), Curry (2) and Davis (2).
