The Octorara Community Recreation Commission (OCRC) and YMCA of the Brandywine Valley are pleased to announce the creation of a joint OCRC/YMCA team to participate in the LanChester Relay for Life on June 23 and 24. Staff and volunteers from both organizations are coming together to support the community and the many adults and children who have been afflicted with cancer.
Bringing people together to improve the quality of life in the community is what both of the organizations are all about. With that common goal, and with the Relay for Life's vision to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise money for research and programs, this just seemed like a perfect fit for both groups. Jointly participating in the Relay for Life and establishing an emotional bond and meeting new people in the community is something that the OCRC and the YMCA feels is important in creating the new Octorara YMCA.
The Octorara Community Recreation Commission (OCRC) and the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley have agreed to join together in the next 18 months and form the Octorara YMCA as a sixth branch under the Brandywine Valley Association. Both organizations are excited about the opportunity to combine their strengths and resources for the benefit of the Octorara community, providing health and recreation programs for children, adults and families for generations to come.
"Community is at the heart of both of our group's efforts," said Brian Wenzka, OCRC Executive Director. "Last year's Relay proved to be a tremendous community event, with many people and organizations joining together to support an important cause. The OCRC and YMCA are very excited to be a part of it."
There is still space on the OCRC/YMCA Relay for Life team. If anyone would like to support the organizations and raise funds to fight cancer, contact the OCRC at 610-593-5963. Wenzka said, "We would like as many in the community as possible to share this experience and help celebrate life."
