The Annual "Spirit of Giving" Luncheon is in final preparation stages. The luncheon is being held on Monday Jan. 21st at the Oxford Area High School to benefit the Oxford Neighborhood Service Center. Mr.

Dave Madden, principal of Oxford Area High School, and seniors Brandy Rodriguez and Lyndsey Berry met with Jane Freemanof the People's Bank of Oxford. The students are using this fundraising experience as a graduation project. The students are asking businesses for monetary donations and they are selling ad space and tickets for the luncheon.

Mr. Madden felt that bringing the students to meet with Freeman would give them the opportunity to learn from a person experienced in coordinating fundraiser events.

Freeman was the recipient of the 1998 Community Service Award presented by the Oxford Chamber of Commerce. She gladly offered to mentor the girls in this "Spirit of Giving" endeavor.

Berry and Rodriguez learned that Freeman, a lifetime resident of Oxford, has worked with People's Bank of Oxford for 22 years and has been actively involved with raising money for worthy causes during this time.

The People's Bank of Oxford is a benefactor of the Neighborhood Service Center and was very willing to have Madden and the high school girls meet at the office. Freeman explained that it is very rewarding personally when you work on fundraisers and that "when you work on a project with others, it makes things fun... Doing things together is not a chore. Also you are giving back to the community and helping people out."

Madden and Freeman both felt that it is wonderful that these Madden and Freeman both felt that it is wonderful that these high school students are becoming so involved with helping out their community at an early age. Freeman also emphasized that fundraising can be a skill that they will use in their future and that many companies encourage their employees to be involved in community service projects.

Additional students are working behind the scenes also preparing for this special event. Student, David White has planned the menu with the help of mentors, Ben Clark and Linda Passalacqua. Several teachers that include Mrs. Kim Webber, Mrs. Basia Manniso and Brenda Moran are working with students in preparing the tickets, programs and many other aspects that go into achieving a successful fundraiser.
