Mildred E. "Milly" Haines, age 82, of Hockessin, Del., died peacefully at her son's home on Thursday, Jan. 17.She was the wife of the late Robert Haines.

Born in Elkton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Evelyn Bird.

Mrs. Haines was raised in Yorklyn, Del.

After graduating from AI DuPont High School, she worked at National Vulcanized Fiber. She married Robert in 1951, and they lived in a home they built in Hockessin. She became a homemaker after having their son Robert Jr.

She loved spending time with her adoring grandchildren and "Nana" will be sadly missed. Her hobbies were gardening, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and reading. In her earlier years she was also an avid bowler.

She was a proud member of the Hockessin Fire Co. Women's Auxiliary for 60 years, during which she held numerous offices and was a fixture at most events at the Hockessin Memorial Hall, also enjoying many meetings and gatherings with her friends there. She was an integral part of the operations of the Memorial Hall.

She will also be greatly missed by her second family, the Hockessin Fire House community, where she was a second mother to many of the men and women there during her many years of service.

She is survived by one son, Robert; daughter-in-law, Carolyn; grandchildren Christopher and Abigail of West Grove; and nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents and siblings.

Her funeral was Jan. 23 at the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home of Kennett Square. Interment was in Union Hill Cemetery.
