A number of Kennett and Unionville High School athletes made their presence felt last week at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Swimming & Diving Championships at Bucknell University.
Kennett's Ryan Lynn put forth the most impressive performance of all the local swimmers. Competing in the Class AA meet, the sophomore standout returned home with a silver and bronze medal.
The Unionville High School boys' swimming team, meanwhile, had a very strong showing in the Class AAA meet.
Juniors John Austin and Jonathan Wertz both shined individually, placing in the top-12 or better in each of their two respective events. Sophomore Brent Sanderson added a fifth place finish. Additionally, those three teamed with Jake Nalls to place in two relays.
The top local female swimmer was Kennett senior Debbi LaRue, who finished 14th in the Class AAA 50-freestyle in a time of 24.63.
Lynn came into the state meet as the District 1 Class AA champion in both the 200- and 500-freestyle. He placed second to Susquehannock's Zack Phillips in the 500-free, touching in a time of 4:36.29. His time in that event was almost 10 seconds quicker than his district championship clocking. Lynn also added a third place finish in the 200-free (1:41.93) just behind champion Jonathan Rubritz of Dover's winning time of 1:41.59. Lynn was almost five seconds faster in that event at states compared to districts.
For Unionville, Austin placed fifth in the Class AAA 50-freestyle (21.26) and eighth in the 100-freestyle (46.97). Wertz was seventh in the 100-butterfly (52.04) and 12th in the 100-backstroke (54.18). Sanderson, a sophomore, crossed fifth in the 100-breaststroke (58.99).
Austin, Wertz, Sanderson and Jake Nalls teamed up to place seventh in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.63) and the group also finished 16th in the 200-free relay (1:30.13).
