Last week the Avon Grove Sun reported that the Oxford 11-U girls' Little League softball team was removed from post-season play because one member was over-age. That violation was discovered in the second of two playoff games against the Avon Grove team. The player got into that situation because her birth certificate review process was apparently incomplete or not done accurately.
Dennis Brown, the game director for offered clarification late last week.
He said the teams in question were not 11-U (11 and under girls), but rather 10-U (10 and under). He added that some Avon Grove parents had approached their coach, questioning the age of the Oxford player. He said the coach then contacted him, and he sent the issue upward in the Little League hierarchy, so the decision to disqualify the Oxford team came ultimately from the top of the organization at Williamsport.
Meanwhile, the Avon Grove 11-U girls won the District 28 championship by beating West Side at the West Side Field. On Sunday, they won the Section 7 tournament by beating Exeter 14-10 in the second of two games. They will now travel to Drexel Hill this weekend to play in the Eastern States.
