On a perfect summer morning this past Monday, KAU's Stoney Marston Field's were filled with area youngsters as Kennett High School varsity baseball coach Dustin Mott's Blue Demon Baseball Camp opened.
The four-day camp for players ages 7 to 12 attracted a record turn-out this year, with the majority of kids attending either the Kennett or Unionville school districts.
Mott will hold another camp later this summer from Aug. 3 to 6. Cost is $125 for the week.
"We focus on having fun and teaching the fundamentals -- learning to play the game the right way," said Mott. "The kids all really seem to enjoy themselves. Most of them have already signed up for our other camp later this summer."
The camp goes from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day. Proper fielding, hitting and base running are stressed throughout the week. The players then get to put to use what they've learned during scrimmages.
Mott runs the camp along with the help of some of his current and former players.
"It works two ways," he said. "It's a great experience for the players out here playing. And it gives my players and former players a chance to work with kids."
