Joseph J. "Jo-Jo" Mardi Jr., 79, formerly of Bridgeport, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 28, surrounded by his loving family.He was the husband of Helen M. Ritrovato Mardi, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born in the Black Horse section of Plymouth Township, he was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine Vuotto Mardi.
Mr. Mardi was a steel worker for the former Alan Wood Steel Co., a security guard for Upper Merion High School and General Electric Co. He was also a part-time Bridgeport police officer for 28 years and held the office of mayor of Bridgeport in 1990.
He graduated from St. Augustine School, Class of 1942 and Bridgeport High School, Class of 1946. He was a former all-around sports star at Bridgeport High School and he played for, coached and managed various sports teams in the area.
He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Bridgeport, and he enjoyed spending time with family, both locally and in Ocean City, N.J. He enjoyed organizing class reunions, was a continued supporter of the Borough of Bridgeport and was a lifetime member of the Bridgeport Community Hall of Fame.
He was an avid sports fan, and he especially enjoyed the Phillies and the Eagles. He was very well known and well liked. He always had a wonderful smile and a kind word for everyone who crossed his path. He displayed an enormous amount of courage, strength and positive thinking over his many years of illness. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three loving daughters, Lenora M. Bukata and her husband, John, of Kennett Square, Joanne M.
Mardi and Stephen Finnegan of Gwynedd and Rosanne H. Kingkiner and her husband, Jeff, of Gulph Mills; two granddaughters, Kristen Lee Bukata Neuser and her husband, Carl, of New London Township and Lisa M. Bukata Taraba and her husband, Joseph, of West Grove; a great-granddaughter, Karlee M. Neuser; two brothers, George Mardi and Richard Mardi, both of Norristown; a sister, Joann Zimmerman and her husband, Charles, of Norristown; and many nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by a baby sister, Margaret and his twin sisters, Rita Mardi Russo and Marie Mardi Puco.
His funeral Mass was at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bridgeport, on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Interment will be in St. Augustine Cemetery in King of Prussia.
