Kennett Area Parks and Recreation will hold its popular Kids Cross Country Race on Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m. in Anson B. Nixon Park.

The event is free of charge and open to all children ages 14-and-under.

The 1.5-mile race starts and finishes near the main stage in the park.

This year will be sixth running of the event, which started in 2004. Last summer, a record turn-out of 113 area children took part.

Tim Christopher was the overall winner a year ago with a time of 9 minutes, 27 seconds. Krissy Gallivan, meanwhile, was the top female finisher as she completed the course in 10 minutes, 31 seconds.

Both of those times were course records. The event is timed by Dick Fitch of the Athlete's Closet in West Chester. Fitch also times the annual Kennett Run.

Numerous volunteers will be on hand during the race, spread out along the course to ensure that all participants are safe and do not get lost while making their way around the 1.5-mile course.

Prizes will be awarded to all participants, and trophies will be presented to the top finishers in various age categories.
