Floyd Hershey of Colerain Township was named Solanco Republican of the Year Saturday morning at the annual Solanco Republican Committee Breakfast at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Quarryville.Hershey, a former Colerain Township supervisor, was recognized for his contributions to the Republican party.
The breakfast, which raises money from an auction for two scholarships for Solanco High School seniors, was very successful this year. Gary Shirk was auctioneer for the event, which raised $1, 590.
Violet Snyder of Drumore was the big bidder in the auction. She paid $600 for a picture of Abraham Lincoln painted by Congressman Joe Pitts. He painted the picture of the face of the statue of Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial shortly after Sept. 11, 2001. He said that he felt that Lincoln's face captured the sorrow of the nation.
Pitts also gave an update on what is happening in Washington D.C.
Bryan Cutler, state Rep. for the 100th District, was keynote speaker at the breakfast. He spoke about the "Status of reform in Pennsylvania."
State Sen. Gibson Armstrong also spoke and was given a piece of pottery by the Solanco Republicans for his 27 years of service to the district. The breakfast was one of the last events Armstrong will be attending before he retires.
Miss Solanco Marla Hart, a senior, sang the National Anthem.
