With only two seniors on this year's team, the Solanco field hockey team could take their lumps, but with some athletic underclassmen the future may be brighter than expected. Although graduated seniors, Liz Koch, Morgan Jackson and Holly Powers have left the stable, seniors Chelsea Tice (midfield) and Kylee Kostenbader (forward) form a solid nucleus along with juniors Tricia Jackson (forward) and Mary Atkins (back) and sophomore Kate Miller (forward).Head coach Stacy Kline begins her fourth season as the team's head coach with a career record of 9-14-1. Last year Solanco finished sixth in Section I. To begin the 2008 fall season the Golden Mules move to Section II, and this may provide the opportunity to put a few more wins in the column. "We are a young team," said Kline. "We only have two seniors but we have commitment and focus, so we are cautiously optimistic. The players put in extra time running, lifting, attending camp and open play. We had several players on a club team during the off season."
Assisted by Linda Day and Deb Atkins, Kline doesn't know what to expect during league play. "We're new to this section.
We were in Section I last year, so I'm not sure," said Kline when asked who she sees as the Section favorite. She was quick to point out that Penn Manor appears to be the class of the L-L League.
Solanco opens the season with a non-league contest against Pequea Valley at home on Friday, Aug. 29, beginning at 10 a.m.
The first league game will find the Mules hosting Garden Spot at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3.
