Three Downingtown wrestlers-one from East, two from West-wrestled in the PIAA State Wrestling championships this past weekend, but none was able to break through to the medal rounds.
Rob Akers, from West, was dropped to the consolation rounds after losing by fall to Lewistown's Matt Snyder, who went on to claim a third place medal. In the consolations, Akers picked up a win, decking Milton's Brock Waughn in 2:27. Akers run ended in the next round, on win shy of the medal round, with a tech fall loss to Emmaus' Taylor Brown.
West's Steve Rathfon drew the eventual state-runner up in the first round, Shaler's Nick Nelson. Nelson decisioned the Whippets' senior 13-6. In consolations, Rathfon topped DuBois Zach Brussard 3-1 to keep his medal hopes alive, but saw his tournament come to an end when he was edged 4-2 by Steve Bosack from State College. Bosack went on to finish 4th.
The only one of the three Downingtown wrestlers to win an opening round bout was East heavyweight Mike Lukenda. Lukenda got his tournament going with an 11-3 win over the Southcentral Regional champ, Elizabethtown's Brad Ladd. Lukenda was dropped to the consolations with a 3-1 overtime loss to eventual fifth place finisher Ryan Tomei of Penn Trafford. In consolations, Lukenda's chase for a medal ended with a loss by fall to Indian Valley's Nate Knepp.
