The Avon Grove Area Little League's 50th Anniversary regular season came to an end recently. The season was marked with many highlights, including a fantastic opening day ceremony that drew many alumni of the league back to kick off the season. The Major's season saw many tightly contested games amongst the nine teams, which also included the league's first no-hitter in over a decade. The strong and talented Cubs of Tim Thompson claimed the regular season title. The Cubs finished the season with an amazing 14-2 record. This was the Cubs first regular season title since 1981.Coming on strong at the end of the season, the Bears of Tim Bonner claimed the league title by defeating the Cougars of Jim Trouba in one of the most tightly contested finals in many years, according to longtime league scorekeeper Dan Sylvina. The Bears barely edged the Cougars by winning the best-of-three finals, two games to one with the last two games each going extra innings. The Bears were also the first team since the 50s to have seven players hit home runs during the season.
Congratulations to all players and volunteers for a successful 50th Anniversary season. Fans should remember that the tournament season is just beginning, and with Avon Grove hosting many tournament games, should come out to watch as the All Star Tournament Teams compete with other teams from around the district.
