Charles Montfort Melchior, 83, of Kennett Square, Pa., died Wednesday, November 5 at Cross-lands. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Louise (Roberts) Melchior.Born in Strasbourg, France, he was the son of the late V. Montfort and Marthe (Charbonneau) Melchior. After serving during World War II in the Army Air Corps, he graduated from Haverford College in 1950, and received his Masters from the Fells Institute at the University of Pa. Melchior spent 30+ successful, challenging and satisfying years as city manager of Cherry Hill, Paramus, Fort Lee and Galloway in N.J., and in Marple Township and Levittown in Pa. A member of the Society of Friends, he spent his retirement as a community organizer and peace activist.

He was the loving father of three daughters: Emma Simpson of Haverford, Pa.; Jeanne Melchior of Rosendale, N.Y.; Mary Melchior of Washington, DC; and one son: O. Montfort Melchior of Greenbelt, Md., as well as the doting grandfather of six grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, November 23 at 2pm at Crosslands Retirement Community, William Penn Lounge in Kennett Square, Pa.
