Lou Marshall, an illustrator, muralist, and furniture designer, is now offering cartooning classes for children ages 5 and up at her studio in Willowdale Towne Center, in the back of the Green Bee. Children can learn the techniques and tools of cartooning through facial expressions, emotions, action, and story-lines and create their own cartoon characters. Registration is now open for new sessions on weekdays and Saturdays, with six to eight children per class. The class meets once a week for four weeks for $60 in Willowdale or West Grove. Private lessons and gift certificates are also available.Marshall says her goal is "to enrich children's imaginations with color, playful characters and a sense of humor to which kids of all ages can relate."
For 15 years, Marshall has created "happy havens" for children's bedrooms and play spaces. She says, "The kids I adore. I'll paint a nursery for somebody and then I'll get to meet the baby." She recently worked on two children's rooms and a recreational therapy room for The Extreme Makeover Home Edition in Wilmington, Delaware that will air in May 2008. She has also designed the interior for Boomers Family Fun Center and the Ducklings Early Learning Center in Kennett Square.
Marshall is also expanding her collections to include custom prints of her favorite characters, baby clothes, room and fabric borders, printed fabrics, furniture and accessories. She also holds seminars to explain what is current in kids' design. She will also teach customers how to create their own "happy havens." She also holds birthday parties and special events for scouts or other youth groups. She says, "I enjoy the kids. They're inspiring."
Marshall recently received an offer from The Schiffer Book Publishing Co. (her own 128 page picture book of her rooms, complete with how-tos and tips). It will be out spring 2009 in Borders book stores to start. In the spring, an interior design book will feature a couple of her photos of a "grown up" room and a child's room.
