Barbie DeCarlo's 35-year legacy in the Kennett Consolidated School District is about to come to an end.On June 27, DeCarlo will officially bid the halls of New Garden Elementary adieu for the last time as she officially begins her retirement.

DeCarlo said her interest in education began when she was just 3 years old, after learning that her neighbor from across the street in West Chester was a teacher.

"She was a little scary," DeCarlo said.

Eventually, she found out that the neighbor, Johanna Havelick, was a principal at the now defunct Kennett Elementary School.

"She was tough, but we ended up getting along very, very well. And subsequently, when I was ready to apply for jobs, I know she was one of the biggest advocates for me getting a job here in the district," DeCarlo said.

That was in 1973, when she started off at Mary D. Lang Elementary teach
