The Avon Grove High School wrestling team hosted its 10th annual Devil Duals Tournament last Saturday afternoon.A total of 12 schools competed in the event.
Avon Grove went 3-2 on the day. They defeated Monsignor Bonner, Wyomissing and Bensalem. The losses, meanwhile, came against a pair of Ches-Mont League teams, Unionville and West Chester Rustin.
Wilson-West Lawn won the tournament. Springfield (Delco) placed second.
Avon Grove, who won the South Carolina Warrior Warm-Up Tournament earlier this season, is now an impressive 13-4 overall in 2007-08. In addition, the Red Devils are 2-0 in the Ches-Mont League.
"I'm proud of our team," said Frank McCue, who has coached Avon Grove to nine winning seasons in the last 10 years. "We've got a really fun group this year that comes into practice and works hard every day.
"We may be 13-4 right now, but there's room for improvement. We've got a lot of season left, and we're going to keep working hard in practice and hopefully we'll keep getting better and better."
Four Avon Grove wrestlers went 5-0 in the Devil Duals Tournament: senior Mike Chrzanowski (152), senior Rob Massi (160), senior Mike Zebrowski (215) and senior John Tipton (275).
McCue said he is leaning towards making some changes to next year's tournament, which draws big crowds throughout the day to Avon Grove High School's gymnasium.
"I was pleased with the way things ran," McCue said. "It was a real nice mix of teams, and there was certainly a lot of good wrestling.
"But it's a long day, and we really don't have the space for 12 teams. I think we're going to trim the tournament to eight teams next year. It's too long a day with just four mats. Wrestling started at 9 o'clock in the morning and we didn't get out of their until 7 or 8."
