Anthony "Tough Tony" Cartieri, beloved father and husband, 90, died July 23, 2008. Formerly of Chester, Pa., Mr Cartieri moved to West Grove, Pa. in retirement.He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Wanda Wojciechowski Cartieri, beloved son, Daniel Thomas Cartieri, a very special daughter-in-law, JoAnne Cartieri, brothers Dominic, John, and Bastiana, sisters Katie, Frances, and Rose, and parents, Joanna and Dominic Cartieri, of Schuylkill Haven, Pa.
Mr. Cartieri is survived by 11 children: Edward Cartieri of Cherry Hill, NJ, Barbara Timony of Boothwyn, Pa., Marlene Olszweski of Houston, Tx., Patricia Malone of Kentfield, Ca., Diane Chermol of Wilmington, Del., Dolores Connors of Glen Mills, Pa., Ronald Cartieri of Philadelphia, Pa., Donna Malloy of Wilmington, Del., Joanne Moore of Cochranville, Pa., Antoinette Phillips of Chichester, Pa., and Michael Cartieri of Oxford, Pa., 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Cartieri worked on the railroad for 30 years. He began his railroad career with the original Pennsylvania Railroad in the freight division, and moved into passenger service as the company changed to Penn Central, then to ConRail. He was a proud member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT), and maintained friendships with his fellow trainmen in retirement.
As a young man, Mr. Cartieri left school to help support his family, and at the age of 60, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of completing his high school GED then continued to take courses at Widener College.
In addition to working for the railroad, Mr. Cartieri owned and operated "Tony's Television Service" for a number of years. He enjoyed Philadelphia sports, had a passion for Oldsmobiles, and was an avid Phillies fan. He enjoyed traveling with family and talking politics. He also enjoyed country music and playing the harmonica.
Mr. Cartieri's infectious laugh, generous spirit, quick wit, and endearing sense of humor will be sadly missed. The entire Cartieri family extends appreciation to the medical professionals at St. Francis Hospital, Christiana Care, and Churchman's Village, all in Wilmington, Del., for their skilled and compassionate care.
Viewing was held Monday July, 28, 2008 from 10 - 11 a.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 300 State Road, West Grove, Pa. Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow. Interment will be at St Patrick's Cemetery in Kennett Square, PA. Arrangements by: Cleveland and Grieco Funeral Home, Avondale, Pa. 610.268.2166.
