After 25 years and hundreds of weddings, Kennett Fire Co. discovers it does not own land used by bridal parties

KENNETT SQUARE>> For 25 years, bridal parties have enjoyed the outdoors on land across the street from the Kennett Fire Co. No. 1. Brides and grooms have gotten their photos taken at the gazebo and the beautiful gardens there.

But now there’s a big problem. The Kennett Fire Co., which uses the Red Clay Room for a variety of events, including weddings, does not own the land.

That revelation was made Monday night when officials of the Kennett Fire Co. asked council if it could transfer the property to them.

Because the Kennett Fire Co. is planning on improving the outdoor space -- including installing a new gazebo -- to better accommodate wedding parties, a land survey was done. The results were surprising.

“We had no idea we did not own that piece of property,” said Gina Puoci, vice-president of Kennett Fire Co. No. 1. For 30 years we have been taking care of that property and doing things on that property.”

Puoci said no one at the fire company or at borough hall had a clue the property was borough-owned.

“We are asking the borough to give us the property we have maintained for all these years,” Puoci said. “Even the existing gazebo is not on our property.”
