The following is a look at the recently concluded fall high school sports season with a recap of Ches-Mont League champions, district and state champions. All sports have finished for the season, with the exception of the high school football playoffs.Football

Downingtown West and West Chester Rustin are the two remaining Ches-Mont League schools still alive in the playoffs.

Downingtown West and Downingtown East were co-champions of the Ches-Mont League National Division this season with 5-1 records. West Chester Rustin won the American Division title with a perfect 5-0 mark.

Avon Grove (4-6 overall) finished 2-4 in the ChesMont League, ranking them in a tie for fifth place in the seven-team National Division.

Boys' Soccer

Ches-Mont League champion Downingtown West had a banner year. The Whippets went on to excel in the post-season. They won the District 1 Class AAA title by beating Neshaminy, 1-0, in overtime and then captured the PIAA Class AAA state title with a 2-1 victory over Peters Township in the finals in Hershey.

In the regular season, Down-ingtown West took the Ches-Mont League's National Division with a 11-1 mark. Octorara won the Ches-Mont American Division at 11-1. In the league championship game, Downing-town West beat Octorara 2-0 to capture the league crown.

Avon Grove went 0-12, and was last in the seven-team National Division.

Girls' Soccer

Downingtown West was the class of the Ches-Mont League this season. The Lady Whippets won the National Division crown with a perfect 12-0 mark and then went on to capture the overall league title with a 6-3 win over American Division winner Unionville in the league championship game. West went on to win the District 1 Class AAA title with a 2-0 victory over Villa Joseph Marie in the finals. West then lost to eventual state champion Conestoga, 1-0, in the state semifinals.

Unionville had an outstanding season, going 10-0-2 in the league to capture the Ches-Mont American Division crown. The Lady Indians then made it all the way to the District 1 Class AAA quarterfinals, where they were edged by eventual state champion Conestoga by a score of 3-2.

Avon Grove was 3-9 in the Ches-Mont League, finishing tied for fifth place in the seven-team National Division.

Field Hockey

Downingtown West won the overall Ches-Mont League championship. West took the National Division crown with a 11-0-1 record, then beat American Division winner West Chester Rustin (11-0-1) in the league title game. West went on to finish third in the District 1 Class AAA tournament.

Avon Grove was 4-7-1 in the league, which was fifth best in the seven-team National Division.

Volleyball

It was quite the year for Ches-Mont volleyball as both Avon Grove and Unionville finished in the top eight of the state.

Unionville, who won the Ches-Mont American Division at 12-0, went on to advance all the way to the District 1 Class AAA championship game. The Lady Indians lost 3-0 to Upper Merion, but clinched a berth in the state tournament. Unionville then won its opening round game in the state playoffs to reach the states final eight and pool play in York, where its season came to a close.

Avon Grove actually finished second in the Ches-Mont League's National Division with a 13-1 mark as they lost to Bishop Shanahan (13-1) in a tiebreaker game for the division crown. Avon Grove got its revenge, however, ending Shanahan's season in the district playoffs. The Lady Red Devils went on to finish third in the district tournament, earning a berth in states. Once there, Avon Grove caught fire. They won their opening round game, then went 3-0 in pool play, which consisted of the final eight teams in the state. That put Avon Grove in the state semifinals. One win from reaching the state title game, Avon Grove lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to North Allegheny.

Boys Cross Country

West Chester Henderson was the top squad in the Ches-Mont League this fall. The Warriors won the National Division title with a perfect 6-0 record, and then went on to finish fourth at the District 1 Class AAA meet and seventh at the state meet.

Great Valley won the Ches-Mont American Division with a 6-0 mark, in front of second place Unionville (5-1) and third place Kennett (4-2). Great Valley also placed eighth overall at the District 1 Class AAA meet.

Avon Grove went 2-4 in the Ches-Mont, finishing fifth in the seven-team National Division.

District 1 AAA champion: North Penn District 1 AA champion: Springfield (Montco)

AA state champion: Elk Lake

Girls' Cross Country

Downingtown East was the top team in the Ches-Mont League this past season. The Lady Cougars captured the National Division crown with a 6-0 mark, then placed third overall at the District 1 Class AAA meet and 14th at states.

Unionville won the Ches-Mont American Division title with a 6-0 league record. The Lady Indians went on to finish 14th at the District 1 Class AAA meet.

Avon Grove went 1-5 in the league, tied for last place in the Ches-Mont National Division.

Golf

It was a memorable season for Kennett High School. Kennett won the Ches-Mont American Division title with a 10-2 record, and Kennett senior Christine Shimel won the PIAA State Girls Golf Championship. Shimel also captured the Ches-Mont League individual title, finishing first overall in a field that consisted of both boys and girls.

Downingtown West won the Ches-Mont National Division with a 10-2 record.

Avon Grove finished 2-9 and in sixth place in the seven-team Ches-Mont National Division.

Girls' Tennis

West Chester Henderson and Unionville ruled the Ches-Mont League this fall. Henderson won the National Division crown with a perfect 12-0 mark, while Unionville claimed the American Division title with an undefeated 12-0 record.

Avon Grove went 6-6, and was fourth in the seven-team Ches-Mont National Division.
