West Rockhill fourth-grader chops the competition on ‘Chopped Junior’

Junior chef and West Rockhill resident Lucy Chelton poses at her station, as seen on Food Network’s “Chopped Junior,” Season 3.

Just days away from her 10th birthday, West Rockhill resident Lucy Chelton is the latest winner of “Chopped Junior.”

The second episode in the third season of the Food Network kids competitive cooking show aired Aug. 2 and was titled “Rattled” for the unsettling appetizer round ingredient of rattlesnake. The other basket ingredients the contestants had to cook with were sweet limes, broccoli leaves and fruit cereal marshmallow treats. Lucy wowed host Ted Allen and the judges’ panel of Amanda Freitag, Brazilian chef Raiza Costa and Chris Colfer from “Glee” with a deep-fried rattlesnake nugget with broccoli leaf and sweet lime hollandaise sauce on the side.

“I know that I’m Lucy, and I’m a great girl, and I’m a great cook ... confidence is half the battle,” she said on the show.

“A Slithering Surprise” highlight video from the episode can be seen at www.foodnetwork.com/choppedjunior. The entire episode may be seen on the Food Network app.

Chelton’s mother, Miki, commented in an email how helpful and encouraging Lucy was to the other contestants.

“I am beyond the moon with how they portrayed her. The personality they showed for her is really how she is. She’s spunky and just a loving kid full of joy,” Miki said.

“Also, they made the fact that she is a Girl Scout shine. They talked about her selling 1,026 boxes of cookies this year. She said, ‘If I can sell 1,026 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, winning “Chopped Junior” is a piece of cake.’ And the quote flying around my friends on Facebook is ‘Cinnamon is the new garlic.’”

There’s no word yet if Lucy will be invited back for a future episode.
