The Youth Philanthropy Award honors young, emerging philanthropists under age 35, who give time, talent and treasure, while also inspiring others to give. This year’s award winner, West Grove Garage Student Advisory Council, has been instrumental in the success of growing after-school programs.
Each year Chester County Community Foundation looks for outstanding Chester County citizens who have made a notable effort to improve the communities where they live, work and play. The Foundation honors these individuals with Legacy Awards in five categories of philanthropy: Youth Philanthropy, Thanks for Caring, Door Opener, Corporate Social Investment, and The Jordan Award.
Each Legacy Award reflects a unique aspect of the Community Foundation’s mission, which is to increase legacy philanthropy throughout Chester County.
The Council is composed of 10 middle and high school students from Avon Grove School District. They demonstrate leadership skills and a strong commitment to their community and the mission of The Garage. The Garage offers youth enrichment activities, and tutoring/mentoring for middle and high school students
This group of peer-led philanthropists meets monthly to identify and coordinate fundraising, community service and outreach events that benefit the Garage and the greater community.
In 2013, the Council raised over $3,300 to support The Garage’s after-school programs through a variety of student-led fundraising activities, such as student dances, a garage sale, and a Cinco de Mayo fundraiser. For each event, the students oversee every detail including budgeting, marketing, staffing and logistics.
In addition to raising funds for The Garage, the Council coordinates outreach events that help bring new students and families into The Garage, broaden its reach in the community. A Mother’s Day Dinner, Community Soccer Festival, packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and distributing candy on Halloween are examples of recent outreach activities the Council coordinated and implemented.
The Council recognizes that service projects engage their peers in giving back and builds strong relationships throughout the community.
Council outreach projects include: volunteering at Jenner’s Pond; sorting and distributing donations at The Bridge Food Pantry and Clothing Closet at the Avon Grove Church of the Nazarene; tutoring elementary school students at the Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center in West Chester; repairing homes with Good Neighbors of Kennett Square.
These students have created a legacy of youth philanthropy. They collaboratively influence change by giving of their own time and resources, and by motivating and inspiring their peers, families and the greater community to give.
The West Grove Garage Student Advisory Council and other award recipients will be honored at this year Chester County Community Foundation Legacy Awards Celebration & Annual Meeting on Monday, November 3, 2014 at West Chester University’s Madeleine Wing Adler Theater.
