Friday night, the Avon Grove High School football team will get a shot at one of the true big boys in District 1 football history.

The Red Devils will continue its magical season on Nov. 27 when they travel to Lansdale to face North Penn in the semifinal round of the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Avon Grove (11-1 overall) is the No. 5 seed in what started out as a 16-team tournament. The Red Devils opened districts with a 41-14 pounding of Quakertown and then followed that up by beating Downingtown West 35-21 last week.

Undefeated North Penn (12-0 overall) is the No. 1 seed in districts. The Knights beat Council Rock North (39-12) in the first round of the playoffs and then Neshaminy (35-22) last week.

The winner of Friday night's Avon Grove/North Penn game will advance to play for the District 1 title the following week against the winner of the Downingtown East/Ridley game.

North Penn has been dominant this season.

The Knights, who made it all the way to the state semifinals a year ago before losing to eventual champion Bethlehem Liberty, have not trailed in a game this season since the first half of its season opener on Sept. 4 against Bethlehem Liberty. North Penn went on to win that game 42-10.

The Suburban One League Continental champions are coached by Dick Beck.

The Red Devils are experiencing their best season in school history. At 11-1 overall they have been the talk of the area this season. A win by the Red Devils on Friday night would turn heads throughout the state.

Game site note

As of our paper's deadline on Monday afternoon, the game site for the North Penn/Avon Grove district semifinal game was North Penn High School's Crawford Stadium.

North Penn, who plays on a grass field, has moved each of its first two home district playoff games to nearby Souderton High School due to poor field conditions.

Visit www.district-one.net for updated game site information if weather is a factor.
