Kennett football team looking to set school record for wins in a season on Saturday at Shanahan
By Brad Spahr
The Kennett High School football team will close out its 2009 season this Saturday, Nov. 14 when it travels to Bishop Shanahan for a 1 p.m. nonleague game.
With a victory over a Bishop Shanahan squad that has struggled all season and is just 3-7 overall, the Blue Demons will set a school record for wins in a season.
Kennett enters its season finale sporting a 4-6 overall mark. Since the school brought back the varsity football program five years ago, the Demons have never won more than four games in a season.
They will have an excellent chance to change that come Saturday afternoon.
"It would be really great to get to five wins," said Kennett head coach Jim Donato. "Especially considering we started this season 0-4 and we lost our starting quarterback the day before camp.
"We could end up winning five of our last seven games and that would be pretty impressive. But we've got to get it done. We can't lay an egg this Saturday."
Kennett lost its first four games this season. The Blue Demons bounced back though to win three straight over Octorara (51-28), Oxford (28-6) and Sun Valley (15-14).
After losing to two very tough squads in West Chester Rustin and Unionville in back-to-back week's to fall to 3-6 overall, Kennett scored arguably its most impressive win of the season last Friday night with a 21-7 victory over Great Valley.
"From a defensive standpoint that was the best we've played all season," said Donato. "And it was definitely one of the better wins we've had all season."
