“Beyond the Garden Gate,” a Standard Flower Show, sponsored by five garden clubs of District I and under the auspices of the Visitor Education Department of Longwood Gardens , will be held Saturday Sept. 28, and Sunday, Sept. 29, at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, according to a press release. All gardeners and floral arrangers are invited to participate in this event.

Kay Leto and Peggy Hartwick, Club members from District I and co-chairs say a “Standard Flower Show” is one that conforms to standards established by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The clubs hope to introduce the public to new and different horticultural experiences in addition to exciting and beautiful means of displaying horticulture in floral designs.

The five garden clubs participating are the Country Gardeners, Four Season’s Garden Club of Kennett Square, Garden Club of Springfield, Garden Class of the Woman’s Community Club of Uwchlan, and Spade and Trowel of Kennett Square. The first Standard Flower Show at Longwood Gardens was held in 1989 by Four Seasons Garden Club of Kennett Square. Since then, eleven shows have been staged every two years adding three or four other clubs that can work together. Thru the years the committees have applied for and won numerous National Garden Clubs, Inc. flower show achievement awards. Looking forward to their twelfth show, the Clubs bring a healthy competition to the event as well as a lot of fun along the way with fellow club members..
