Prior to the end of the school year, students in Stephanie Loughran’s social studies classes at Oxford Area High School collected items for a care package that was sent to Mrs. Loughran’s former student, Jesse Bendokas, a Class of 2011 graduate who has been serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan since January. The students collected an array of items for Bendokas and his platoon members to enjoy and remind them of home.
“Upon talking with Jesse over the course of his deployment and sharing some of his stories with my classes, we decided to make a care package for him to try to make his stay a little more comfortable,” said Mrs. Loughran. “I opened this opportunity up to all of my American History students and quite a few took the opportunity to help, as well as sign a poster thanking him and his platoon members for their service.”
Among the items included in the package were a V-J Day poster, beef jerky, nuts, candy and cookies, games, books, lip balm, socks, toiletries, energy bars, a football, a Frisbee, several thank-you cards, chewing gum, and postcards.
