Illusionist visits Penn's Grove

Tom Coverly, a professional illusionist and youth speaker who has worked with young people and schools throughout the world, recently visited Pennís Grove Middle School to conduct an assembly during which he performed several sleight-of-hand feats and spoke with the students about the issues they face each day, including physical and internet safety, drugs and alcohol, and bullying, often referring to his own experiences and those of his five children. Mr. Coverly, who grew up in Camden, N.J. and lives in Michigan, is the brother of Oxford Police Officer Chris Coverly, who presents programs at Pennís Grove on making safe and positive lifestyle choices throughout the school year. Through magic, frank talk and lots of humor, Tom Coverly encouraged students to reject the illusions about who they should be that are created by media - and often spread unknowingly by their peers - and accept the fact that every individual is ďperfectly imperfect.Ē Pictured from left are seventh grader Jon Potter, eighth grader David Harris, Tom Coverly, his wife and assistant Kim, and seventh grader Arunothai Jascewsky.
