Imagine a hot July day with a weather forecast of 90º and humid. Where can you take the kids for a swim and spend an afternoon playing in and out of the water? The London Grove Lake Club Committee invites you to bring them to a safe, cool, refreshing, groundwater-fed lake, just off of Route 41 in London Grove Township. The lake will have a children’s beach and swim area, a section for swimming laps, lounging on a raft, fishing, Frisbee golf, and archery, plus a grassy area for blankets and chairs, some picnic tables, barbecue grates, changing rooms, bathrooms, and showers. That’s the vision.
The reality is that getting there will take many small steps to achieve the larger vision, including a membership drive to determine whether the site can attract the 150 or so family members or combination of individual and family members to cover the expenses. In addition to memberships, the plan has to have the approval of the London Grove Township Board of Supervisors. A railroad crossing agreement needs to be negotiated, a staff to operate the facility safely needs to be hired, safety equipment and supplies need to be purchased, and the ropes, floats, life guard stands, and a sandy beach need to be put in place.
The reality also is that this swim club is a work in progress. If it does open in 2013, there will be a staff to operate the club safely, a beach for children and another area for adults and children who pass a swimming test. There would be no other facilities as yet – think of a primitive state park. All the other amenities will have to wait until we accumulate the necessary capital for improvements.
To learn more and understand how the membership drive will work, interested individuals should download information about membership from the township web site www.londongrove.org (look under the Parks and Recreation Board area), stop by the township office for a printed information sheet, call the township office for information 610-345-0100, or stop by the open house at the lake on April 13 from noon to 4 p.m.
