LONDON GROVE -- Customers at the Lowe’s store on Route 41 have the option of getting a hamburger and soda with their garden supplies this spring thanks to the arrival of Midnight Munchies.

The large food van parked in front of the home supply store is owned and staffed Dom Pizzo of West Grove. He is there everyday it’s not raining from about 9:30 a.m. until mid-afternoon, and his menu includes everything from breakfast sandwiches to pulled pork and chicken fingers. For those who want a small snack, he has Philly pretzels and Herr’s potato chips.

Pizzo, 68, is a native of South Philadelphia who moved westward to the suburbs and landed in West Grove about 13 years ago.

He had been working at a nursing home, which was sold. When that happened, he and his wife decided to get into the food truck business, he said.

He began at by pulling up to hospitals with his fare.

He said he was concerned by the fact that daytime shift hospital employees had the luxury of cafeteria food, while those who worked the night were stuck with the snack machines.

To remedy that, he created Midnight Munchies with the promise to the late night crew, “You are not forgotten.”

Recently, he decided to bring his truck to the Lowe’s parking lot and offer his food to people who are shopping in the stores in that vicinity.

Already, he said, people have been stopping to pick up a hamburger or hot dog, even in the cold weather. As the weather turns warm and more people arrive to get their garden supplies, he expects more.

To sweeten the deal for emergency responders -- fire fighters, ambulance staffers, police and U.S. military personnel -- as well as Lowe’s employees, he gives discounts on the food. All they have to do is show identification, or even a uniform.

Pizzo said he believes he will provide a convenient service for families with kids because they won’t have to take the time to feed them lunch before they leave to buy their hardware -- just bring them over to the Midnight Munchies and pick up some chicken fingers with fries.

Pizzo also provides catering. Already, he said, he has a wedding scheduled in August and a 16th birthday for July.

Midnight Munchies in not hard to miss. It’s a big red truck, and it’s right in front of the entrance to Lowes.
