LONDON GROVE — A “massive” marijuana growing operation was discovered early last week following a shooting inside a home in the 100 block of Conard Mill Road, according to state police.
Police said one man was shot Friday, Feb. 15, when two masked men forced their way through the home’s front door and opened fire at three men inside.
The victim, identified as 51-year-old Ricardo Cancino of Miami, Fla., suffered non-life threatening injuries and left the area with another man in a vehicle. They were later stopped by the Maryland State Police who reported the incident to authorities in Pennsylvania.
A subsequent search of the Conard Mill Road property revealed what state police called a “massive indoor marijuana grow operation.” Police seized 176 live marijuana plants, 1271 cut plants, about 15 pounds of processed marijuana and a large amount of high quality growing equipment. Officials said the operation likely produced “millions of dollars in illegal proceeds as a result of the cultivation of marijuana.”
Cancino and 49-year-old Justo Castro-Lopez, also from Miami, were charged with conspiracy and drug charges, according to state police. Castro-Lopez was arraigned on the charges at district court and transferred to Chester County Prison after failing to post $100,000 cash bail.
Rico-Cancino is currently held in Delaware awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania, according to police. Police said both men are Cuban nationals.
The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending, police said.
