West Goshen >> Adam Harrison Swope, 38, of Malvern, chair of the Willistown-Malvern Democrats and executive assistant to Chester County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone, died in a fiery accident on Route 202 Saturday afternoon.
West Goshen Police reported that Swope was killed when his vehicle, traveling south on Route 202, was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer hauling frozen turkeys. The rig had entered the southbound lanes and overturned, police said.
Nine vehicles were involved in the accident, police said, and two people were treated at an area hospital for minor injuries. All names of those involved in the crash are being withheld until next of kin are notified, police said. The accident forced the closure of Route 202 until early Sunday morning.
Cozzone said she met Swope in 2005 when he became her campaign manager in her race for county controller. She credited him with her unprecedented 48.19 percent of the vote that year. Swope managed every race of hers since, including Cozzone’s current campaign for Pennsylvania lieutenant governor.
“Words cannot describe the loss to this world of a man so incredibly bright and kind and funny,” Cozzone said on the Chester County Democratic Committee’s Facebook page. “Adam was an eternal optimist who loved his parents, his Nana, cats, the Steelers, Game of Thrones, his fraternity, musicals, weird strategy games, Super Mario, (It’s Always) Sunny in Philadelphia, the Daily Show and politics.”
Dick Bingham, chairman of the Chester County Democratic Committee, zone leader caucus, said he was shocked by the news
“Adam will be truly missed by us all,” Bingham said. “From celebratory mood to gloom, Adam has been a hero among activists and organizers.”
“He worked tirelessly to elect Democrats in Chester County and was beyond thrilled to be a part of the history we made in 2017,” Cozonne said of Swope. “He walked around like the cat that ate the canary. Much more than all of that, Adam was a member of the Cozzone family and our hearts are broken. He loved our son. He loved our cats – probably more than us. We will miss his laugh and his friendship.”
Swope was a former campaign manager for state Sen. Andy Dinniman, D-19; former regional field director at Obama for America; former political director for Lois Murphy, a Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for the 6th Congressional District in 2004 and 2006; former scheduler for former U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel, D-13, and a former field director for Dan Wofford, who lost a close congressional race in the 6th District to Jim Gerlach in 2002.
Police did not describe the type of vehicle Swope was driving or other details of the accident. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video or photographs of it is asked to contact the West Goshen Police Department Traffic Safety Division at 610-696-7400 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
